Selecting an In-Home Care Provider

It’s natural to want only the best for our loved ones. So when it’s time to select an In-Home Care provider, how do you know which is best, especially when there are so many to choose from? Well, as with any service you contract, the best approach is to take your time so you can thoroughly research your options.

Get Referrals
Before you can begin your research, you’ve got to know who to contact. To help compile a list of prospective In-Home Care providers, start by asking others for referrals. Medical workers, caregivers, neighbors and friends, and other family members are good sources of information. Plus there are countless federal, state and local agencies that specialize in senior/aging care, so be sure to tap into these resources, too.

Make a List
When you’ve compiled a list of potential sources, next compile a list of questions to use as a guide during the selection process. That way, you’re sure to ask the same questions of each company you contact. Remember, you’re about to select someone who will come into the home of your loved one on a regular basis to provide care, so you have every right to know as much as you can about that person and the services he or she will be providing.

Here are some questions you’ll want to ask:

What is the screening process for the company’s In-Home Care providers?
How much and what type of training do the In-Home Care providers receive?
How long has the company been in this type of business?
Will different providers come to the home or is only one assigned to each client?
What happens when the In-Home Care provider doesn’t show up as scheduled, either because that person is ill, is on vacation, or is just a no-show?
What steps can be taken when the client/provider relationship isn’t working out?
How are rates determined? What are the payment options? Is the company certified by Medicare (important if you’re seeking reimbursement)? What type of documentation is kept for each in-home care provider visit?
